THE HOLY SPIRIT PT.5 – THE BLESSINGS OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES VIDEO TRANSCRIPTION

We are in Part 5 of knowing Holy Spirit. Part one taught us about the nature of God and the amazing gift of Holy Spirit, a breath of fresh air. In part two, we were enlightened by the meaning of Pentecost as we discussed the three Jewish holidays. Then we discussed knowing and understanding spiritual gifts and being filled the Holy Spirit through baptism in the Holy Spirit. Today is all about praying in tongues. What are the benefits of speaking in tongues? What are the blessings? Is this scriptural? Is it biblical? In each of these sessions we have discussed

  • (Acts 19:1-2) “While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? And they answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

We pray many will embrace the Holy Spirit, like never before, so they can access all that God, the Father, and Son have for them through the Holy Spirit. There are Christians, many people who love Jesus, but they have not been taught about the Holy Spirit. They have not been exposed to the workings of the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit the believer is walking in ignorance. Therefore, the Bible tells us that people perish for lack of knowledge. While ignorance is not a sin, it can cost you all the blessings and the privileges that God desires to be yours. A hefty price to pay that one can avoid.

My desire is to bring understanding and clarity so we can operate with knowledge. Regarding the Holy Spirit in this blog, we want to talk about praying in tongues specifically. This is a hot button issue for some Christians, but we want to identify the blessings because this topic is rarely discussed in church

  • (Acts 2:1KJV) “When the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came sound from heaven as of a mighty, rushing wind. And it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues as of fire, that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.”

Put this in your spirit. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Not some of them but they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. I know some people have condemned speaking in tongues as being demonic. They say that it is non-scriptural, that It’s not for today, but we see this is the early church. When the Holy Spirit came, He gave utterance to their prayer, and gave them a prayer language. As they were praying, they experienced these mighty works of God and began reaching out to God. I want to walk you through some of them here,

Blessing. number one: you declare the wonders of God.

People had come from all over. Remember it was the day of Pentecost. They had come to celebrate the day of the giving of the ten commandments. Remember that Pentecost was 50 days after the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  • (Acts 2:5-12) Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

These people had come from all different places: Jews, converts to Judaism, Cappadocia, Arabs, Pamphylia, and each hears the declaring of the wonders of God in their own language. The people who are praying in tongues, they were praying, given the utterance by the Holy Spirit, but those that heard them, heard them declaring the wonders of God’s blessing. Number one, when you pray in tongues, allow yourself to pray in tongues. Now you are baptized in the Holy Spirit with evidence of praying in tongues. When you pray in tongues, you get to declare the wonders of God as they did.

Blessing number two is that you magnify God.

  • (Acts 10:44-45) “While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all, all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles.”

Remember when the Bible talks about the circumcision, it is talking about the Jews, and they were astonished because they thought, this gift of God was only for the Jews. Here you have the Gentiles, receiving the baptism in the Holy Spirit. They were also speaking in tongues. They heard them speak in tongues and magnify God. Remember, this is on a different occasion. This is later in chapter 10. We see again, they were in one place in a prayer meeting.

Now let me say this for clarity, that I am talking about the private practice of the gift of speaking in tongues not the public gift of tongues and interpretation. We see them in small groups, small settings not publicly in a church. For the sake of clarity, I’m talking about you praying in the spirit in your prayer language and being able to build yourself up and really digging deep into this gift.

We see here in the upper room in the beginning of Acts, all the disciples praying together. Then we see Peter in Chapter 10, praying with other likeminded people, Gentiles. I like to think that they were praying and then the Holy Spirit was poured out to them and they began to speak in tongues as the Spirit gave their utterance.

Blessing number three is when you speak in tongues, you speak directly to God.

  • (1 Corinthians 14:2) “Anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people, but to God.”

That’s why I emphasize this right now. I am hoping that you embrace and go deeper in your personal prayer time, praying in the Holy Spirit. Stop and think about that for a moment. You are speaking directly to God when you speak in tongues. At another time, we can talk about speaking in tongues in the congregation and having somebody else to interpret, another type of speaking in tongues. That’s a different subject all together. What I am talking about is praying in tongues. What are the benefits? What are the blessings, when you are praying tongues as a prayer language, you are speaking to God, the devil cannot decode your message.

That is why I love praying in tongues. I’m a tongue talker. Yes, truly. I love praying in tongues. I pray in tongues probably more than anything, because I discovered this thirty plus years ago. The very first book I wrote was on praying in tongues and I hope to have it published one day soon.

I studied this and I could not believe it. When you pray in tongues, the devil cannot record your message. The Bible says, “If you pray in a tongue, you don’t speak to men, you speak directly to God.” That’s why you can’t stand on the pulpit and preach in tongues. No, you can’t, but in your private prayer time you can. When speaking in tongues, you can pour your heart out to God. As you pray in tongues or pray in the spirit or speak in tongues, whatever terminology you want to use, this is what happens. If you embrace it, it’s going to change your life. It’s going to elevate your prayer time. It’s going to elevate your ability to really plug into all that God has, the rivers of God and the gifts of God, Also, all that the Holy Spirit has for you. Praying in the spirit is the doorway to entering in there.

Blessing number four: when you speak in tongues, you are speaking mysteries

  • (1 Corinthians 14:2) “No one, understands him who speaks in tongues for he speaks mysteries in the Spirit.”

I believe the devil fights praying in tongues so much because of the blessings that are attached to praying in tongues. I believe that’s why the devil fights it and even good, intelligent, smart people that love Jesus condemn praying in tongues. They say, “That’s demonic” or “it’s not for today”. They might even tell you that you really don’t need to concern yourself with that. They will tell you to just seek the deeper things of God and the word of God. But this is the word of God. When you pray in tongues, it says you are speaking mysteries. Mysteries, to whom? To God! You are declaring mysteries.

Paul tells us to ask God that you may interpret or comprehend what you are praying. Praying in tongues builds your spiritual muscle. There comes a time when you begin to understand what you’re praying and as you pray these mysteries, sometimes you are prophesying. Other times you’re declaring and decreeing to the demonic world. You could be rebuking. I’ve experienced this on all kinds of levels.

You are declaring the mysteries of God over yourself, your family, your city, and your marriage. In my book, Working the Works of God, I tell a story of visiting a young girl with AIDS who was suffering terribly. I did not know what to do but I was moved by compassion. She had sores on her head and her armpits and lips were dripping blood. There was barely any meat on her. They had sent her that afternoon to go home and die. When I had, walked in at three o’clock, and started sharing the gospel with her, she couldn’t talk. She was barely nodding her head in agreement,

I closed my eyes, and I thought I was going to pray in English or pray in Ugandan. Suddenly this prayer came forth in tongues. I am with her and a few of our family members sitting around the bed. I prayed a short prayer, a powerful prayer. She told me, as I began to pray, waves of fire kept going through her. By the time I said, “Amen!” The sores had completely dried up., The lips that were dripping. blood had stopped dripping blood. The boils in her armpits had disappeared. Suddenly her wounded body was completely made whole, miraculous, right there. it wasn’t my prayer. It was the prayer of the Holy Spirit. it’s the prayer that the Holy Spirit was praying for her.

He knew what to pray and how to pray it. I was merely the vessel that He was using. When we pray tongues, we pray mysteries of God.

Blessing number five: when we pray in tongues, we edify ourselves.

  • (1 Corinthians 14:4) “He who speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself.”

Do you want to be edified? Then pray in tongues! You’re confused? You’re depressed, stressed out? You don’t know what to do and how to do it. Just begin to pray in the Holy Ghost. When you are praying in tongues, you are edifying yourself, and an intertwining of your spirit with the Spirit of God takes place. Suddenly the Holy Ghost prays for you. This changed my life. Suddenly your spirit, your spiritual muscles begin to strengthen. Think of every time you speak in tongues like you are going to the gym, strengthening yourself. You are working out, exercising. Your spiritual muscles are strengthening and expanding daily, as you pray in tongues. You edify yourself. You are building your spiritual muscles up by the Spirit of God.

Blessing number six: when you speak in tongues, your spirit prays.

Oh, I love this. When you pray in tongues, your spirit prays. YOUR SPIRIT. Your understanding and your mind are cut off for a moment or the duration of the prayer. Your spirit takes over and the doubt from your mind or your logic cannot get in the way because now the Holy Ghost has gotten a hold of your spirit. He’s crying out, He’s speaking and He’s praying out of your spirit man. Listen to this verse,

  • (1 Corinthians 14: 14) “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.”

Now this is Paul, who wrote 80% of the New Testament out of revelation. He says, “If I pray in tongues, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.” For a moment, your understanding, your logic, and the doubt that comes in from all these thoughts, they’re all halted. They’re cut off. It is the spirit of God moving your spirit and your spirit is praying. Dear friend, if you ever want to pray a perfect prayer, pray in tongues, because when you do, listen, this is what happening.

Blessing. Number seven, when you are praying in tongues, the spirit makes intercession for you.

In other words, God Himself is praying for you. God is interceding. The spirit of God who is God, He’s making intercession for you.

  • (Romans 8 26 NKJV) “ Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession [a]for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

“This is the only time in the Bible that it says we don’t not know what to do. We don’t know how to pray. It doesn’t say we don’t know how to preach. It never said we don’t know how to be good husbands, or good spouses. It says we do not know how to pray.

We have a weakness, but listen to this, it is different. We are not left to ourselves. When we pray as God wants, it takes our spirit and our unknown tongue interacting with the Holy Spirit. He’s making intercession for us with groanings, words and tears that cannot be uttered. He knows how to pray for you. He knows how to pray for your marriage, your family, your children, your loved ones that do not know Jesus. He knows how to pray for your business. He knows how to pray for you, for your church, for your community, for your nation, whatever it may be. He knows, you do not know. You may have a prayer point. You may have prayer request a long list of them, but He knows every one of them.

In 2012, we were in Romania doing mission and I was in prayer getting ready to go to this conference. The Holy Spirit stopped me during prayer. I’m on my knees. I am pressing into God. I’m praying for God to move and God to save people. The Holy Spirit said, “Andrew, stop. “I asked, why?” He said, “You are praying for the wrong thing.” I was confused, what did He mean I was praying the wrong thing? “I am praying for people to get saved, touched and that the word of God would move swiftly, and He be glorified.” He said, “Yes, but that is not what I’m doing. That’s not what you ought to be praying for right now. “

Do you know what He told me? He said,” Andrew, I want you to prepare the vessel.” I’m preparing to do the ministry, so I asked Him, “Lord, how do I prepare the vessel?” He just said, “Yield to my spirit. Let me pray with you and for you.” Over the next several hours, I was in my office, on my knees and praying in the Holy Ghost. At one point I remember my wife called me for lunch and the door was locked. I was on my knees, just praying in the Holy Ghost until He was done praying.

A few weeks later, the date of the conference arrived that I had been preparing for all this time. All this time the Holy Spirit has been preparing the vessel. He said,” I’m going to do the ministry. You prepare the vessel. I’m going to prepare the vessel by praying for you and praying through you.”

At the conference, I began by reading Psalm 24. I had prepared to talk about holiness. Yet, by the time I got to verse three, the glory of God entered the room. I did not get to preach that first service. The power of God was so thick, so strong. I could barely hold onto the pulpit. I’m standing there and the sick began to get healed. Demons began to leave people and people were touched from the front to the back of that place. I am just standing quietly, and worship music is softly playing. some songs as we worshiped God, we witnessed a mighty move of God. Listen, friend, I wasn’t doing a thing. I can’t take credit for any of that. What God did at that place, I was just a vessel. I read the Word of God, I just read a scripture and the glory of God, the power of God was so strong. Oh my God. Oh, I feel the anointing and it was so strong.

I remember the pastor could not stand. He was trying to come get the microphone to tell people to come for prayer but he was stopped in his tracks. The power of God was so strong. We just stood there and worshiped His Holiness and exalted His Holiness as He healed the sick and touched people. And at the end, I read the verse again and just invited people to get saved. and people got saved. I remember the pastor told me that there were people watching on television. They were live- streaming. Those people were in tears, as they were calling in, asking how long is this meeting? People got on trains and started coming to the conference. Some were hundreds of miles away, all over Romania, leaving their homes to come to this conference.

Dear friend, it was all because I allowed the Holy Spirit to make intercession. This is powerful. I believe that’s the reason why the devil fights it. He knows if people can learn to access these blessings, the church is not going to be as weak as we are. We’re not going to depend on smoke machines. Do you know that the Bible calls stage fires, strange fire?

Many think we must create a “wow factor”. The Holy Spirit in services in Africa across Europe and even across America. The Holy Ghost WILL BE THE WOW FACTOR, if you let Him. He has wowed multitudes for centuries with the gospel. He has been the only wow factor. He needs to be the only attraction and He can be. I believe the enemy fights this truth. The enemy knows that through it we can really access the power of God. We can really be dangerous.

Blessing number eight, when you pray in the Holy Spirit or praying in tongues, you build your most holy faith.

  • (Jude 1:20) But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

I believe this means that the Holy Spirit takes you and, that the praying in tongues is like the doorway into the gifts and in the power of God, because you are building your most holy faith.

Like I told you with that young lady dying in the hospital, I don’t know if I had faith for a healing or not, but that prayer I prayed in the Holy Spirit built me up for that very moment. Which was what? Maybe less than a minute we prayed, but the power of God touched me, and I could feel it. He touched her and she was instantly healed. What a miracle! When you pray in tongues, you build your most holy faith. When you are faced with circumstances and you do not know what to do even know what to do, begin to pray in the Holy Spirit.

As soon as you do, the Holy Ghost is going to build your most holy faith. Your faith is going to begin to build you up. Some of the most powerful prophecies, words of knowledge, words of wisdom, or prophetic words I’ve ever received came through praying in tongues. They were for myself, even up to today, as I pray in the Holy Spirit, there comes a time when He begins to speak, He begins to edify me.

He opens the portals of heaven. Holy Ghost praying in the spirit is so crucial to your spiritual work. I believe that that’s why the enemy will stop at nothing to stop it. He doesn’t want it to happen. Yes, like anything else of God, some have abused it and it has not always been, packaged well. The presentation has been bad. Yet nothing is more powerful. Life-changing. Many people have been put off, but that’s no reason to really ignore, neglect or throw out this truth because this is life changing. This is powerful. When you pray in the Holy Spirit, let’s re recap these eight blessings. When you pray in the Holy Spirit,

1. 1.You are declaring the wonders of God.

2. You magnify God in a way, no other way can.

3. You speak to God directly.

4. The devil cannot decode your message.

5. You are speaking mysteries to yourself, even to the enemy.

6. You edify yourself, your spirit praise.

7. 7.The Holy Spirit makes intercession for you and

8. You build your most holy faith.

Dear friend, that is good. That is huge enough for me to embrace this truth and to exercise it as part of my everyday life. I believe God wants you to experience the Holy Spirit and the fullness of his work in your life, in an all-new way. Will you embrace praying in the Holy Spirit, in your prayer time, in your private prayer? Will you allow Him to usher you into the gifts, the powers, the revelations of God, as we finish this broadcast today? I want to give you an opportunity to receive Jesus.

You have read this blog and you may be asking, what are you talking about? The key to knowing the Holy Spirit and all these blessings is to receive Jesus Christ into your life as your Lord and your Savior. If you have never started a relationship with Jesus, you can start today by acknowledging what He did in your name and in your place. He died for you. You don’t have to die to go to heaven. Jesus died. You must receive the gift that He gives you today. Would you say this prayer and mean what you say and say what you mean?

  • Lord Jesus, I need you. I am a sinner and I need a Savior and you died in my name and in my place to save me, would you save me now? I turn over my life to you. I believe that God raised you from the dead, that you are the son of God. I confess with my mouth that I am saved today, that you are Lord and savior of my life. Fill my life with your Holy Spirit. Empower me to live for you now until you come. Amen.

Dear friend, you have said that prayer, Jesus has saved you. The Holy Spirit has come into your life to help you to live a life that is holy. That is righteous to make a difference to empower you for a supernatural lifestyle. He’s going to take you into the blessings. Find a Bible, believing, spirit-filled church that believes in the Holy Spirit, His work, His ministry, and get plugged in.
