Love, The Grandest Of Them All Part One Of Three

Love, The Grandest Of Them All Part One Of Three

This Bible Study is taken from Chapter Eight: Love, The Grandest Of Them All of "Working The Works of God" By Dr. Andrew M. Nkoyoyo

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

GOD’S LOVE TOWARD YOU is unconditional, but He blesses you because of what you do. In other words, God loves you the way you are, but His blessings towards your life depend on how you respond to Him. The Bible teaches:

Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the LORD your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the LORD your God: Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country. Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. The LORD will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. The LORD will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you. The LORD will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways. Then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they shall be afraid of you. And the LORD will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your live- stock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. The LORD will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its sea- son, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.  And the LORD will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them. So you shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right or the left, to go after other gods to serve them. (Deuteronomy 28:1-14)

The Scriptures also go on to tell us:

He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins…And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. (1 John 4:8-10, 16)

Self-sacrifice and obedience are clearly two of the most outstanding features of true love. Even Jesus Himself was obedient unto death on the cross (Philippians 2:8), in order to show the unconditional love of God towards us.

If we are going to become what God has called us to be in His Kingdom, we ought to love, just as Christ did—with- out condition.

No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. (1 John 4:12)

I haven’t found a Scripture that better expresses God’s unconditional love towards mankind than John 3:16:

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

God gave His all, His only begotten Son, in order to redeem you and me from destruction. This is the expression of true sacrifice. The motivation behind His passion was nothing but love, and until our hearts are immensely soaked with such love, we will fall short of reaching our loved ones, communities, cities and nations.

True Love is Unqualified

Love is the grandest of them all, for God is love. He desires that we carry His character and attributes and emanate them through our deeds to His people. Even Paul admonished the saints at Corinth to walk in the love of God:

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. (1 Corinthians 13:1-8)

Love is the illustrious theme of the Scriptures. It is the divine motivation of God. Such love moved our Savior to reach out to the lost. It compels us to look up to Him for eternal life and provision in time of need. Oh, that we would display the wonder of His love! Every day, we ought to illustrate God’s unconditional love to His people, regardless of their outward appearance, ethnicity, education, skin color, status quo and background. True love is unqualified!
